Unlocking the Secrets of a Coastal Sauna Adventure
Step into a world of ancient rituals and modern wellness at a hidden gem along the Dorset coast.
Meet Nick Tettersell, or the renowned 'Nick T,' a sauna master extraordinaire. His recent title of Best Sauna Practitioner at the British Sauna Society Sauna Summit 2025 is a testament to his ability to captivate and heal. With a dedicated social media following, Nick T is no ordinary sauna enthusiast.
Imagine a sauna ritual like no other, guided by Nick T himself. When Louise Roberts, owner of Shoreline Sauna in Lyme Regis, extended the invitation, I eagerly accepted. This two-hour journey, rooted in Lithuanian Pirtis traditions, promises a transformative sequence of hot and cold, breathwork, body scrubs, and the art of whisking.
Shoreline Sauna's rustic charm and breathtaking views set the stage for an unforgettable experience. Nestled along the Jurassic Coast, the wood-fired sauna offers a picturesque backdrop for your wellness adventure. Dash down to the sandy beach for a refreshing dip in the sea, or opt for the nearby plunge bath if you prefer.
Arriving early, I found Nick crafting leaf whisks, a key element of the ritual. Locally sourced elderflowers, fern, oak, and birch create a forest-like aroma, connecting you to nature—a Lithuanian sauna tradition. Nick's attention to detail is remarkable.
Nick's journey to becoming a sauna master is a story of self-discovery and healing. Formerly a tree surgeon, he transitioned into holistic wellbeing practices over a decade ago. From massage therapy to embracing sauna culture, Nick's path led him to train with the Lithuanian Bath Academy and the Sipoonjoki Heritage Sauna in Finland. His sessions seamlessly blend Lithuanian and Finnish traditions.
The ritual includes seasonal body scrubs, like the lilac and Portland salt blend, or the energizing coffee scrub. Nick also introduces Finnish 'sauna songs,' creating a captivating atmosphere.
As the sauna filled with six eager participants, we donned swimwear and unique felt sauna hats, regulating our body temperature. Nick, in his distinctive attire, welcomed us and revealed the ritual's structure, guided by the elements: fire, water, earth, and air. His skill lies in leading us through meditation, whisking, and more.
The ritual began with releasing what you're holding onto, or as Nick puts it, 'sweating the shame.' The temperature rises gently, never overwhelming. We embraced the Löyly, the Finnish term for the steam rising from hot stones, offering relaxation, improved circulation, and detoxification. Nick's elderflower whisks filled the air with a sweet scent, guiding us through the process. A refreshing sea dip followed, a perfect contrast to the heat.
The body scrubs and whisking with birch, fern, and oak leaves left us invigorated. We enthusiastically joined in the Finnish sauna songs, creating a unique bond.
An orange segment platter added a citrusy twist, as we rubbed our bodies with the peels. Inhibitions faded, and the group embraced the experience fully, even taking an ice-cold bath. The final sugar and coffee scrub transformed the sauna into a fragrant coffee shop.
After a final sea dip and fresh water rinse, we reflected and rehydrated with Nick's herbal infusion. I felt rejuvenated and relaxed, glowing from the inside out. Nick's passion and expertise had worked their magic, leaving me with a night of deep, restorative sleep.
Shoreline Sauna offers a unique wellness escape, and Nick T's sessions are not to be missed.
But here's the twist: How do you feel about the idea of 'sweating out shame'? Is this a powerful metaphor for release, or does it imply a need to 'purify' ourselves? Share your thoughts below, and let's explore the fascinating world of sauna traditions together!
