Tiger Woods is weighing a high-profile offer to lead the United States as captain of the Ryder Cup team in 2027. The golf icon, who hasn’t competed since the 2024 Open Championship, has indicated he may still consider teeing it up at the Masters this year.
Following the USA’s defeat to Europe at Bethpage in September, attention has shifted to how Team USA can reclaim the Ryder Cup on Irish soil at Adare Manor. Woods is the PGA of America’s top pick for captain, but he will first assess whether he can commit fully to the demanding role.
“I’ve been asked for my input, but I haven’t made my decision yet,” Woods said. “I’m trying to figure out what we’re doing with the [PGA] Tour. That has occupied countless hours, and I’m evaluating if I can truly do this—lead Team USA and support every player and participant involved in the Ryder Cup, and do it justice with my time.”
He added, “Serving on two boards and my work for the PGA Tour have made me question whether I can genuinely contribute and serve at an honorable level.”
Woods’s longstanding connection with JP McManus, owner of the Ryder Cup venue at Adare Manor, remains a talking point. Europe has yet to announce its captain for 2027, though most expect Luke Donald to guide Europe for a third consecutive Ryder Cup. The PGA Tour, for its part, will be keen to avoid a Woods decision turning into a public saga.
Woods, who is part of a PGA Tour committee tasked with reshaping the schedule, noted the extraordinary amount of time he has already dedicated to strategic planning: “I once spent hours and hours practicing in my prime; today’s boardroom work dwarfs that,” he reflected. “It’s been challenging, but we’re aiming to do what’s right.”
Speaking in Los Angeles, where he hosts the Genesis Invitational, Woods confirmed he underwent back disc replacement surgery last October. When asked if Augusta National and a possible Masters appearance within the next two months are off the table, he answered simply: “No.”
“My body has been through a lot. Each day I’m focused on progress—getting stronger, building endurance, and reaching a level where I can compete at the highest level again.”
Overall, Woods remains at the center of questions about leadership, legacy, and the future shape of American golf’s biggest team event, with fans and players alike watching closely to gauge whether he will captain in 2027 or lace up his clubs once more on the Masters stage.
